August 4, 2014

ElliotDeePhoto croppedWe are genuinely delighted and privileged to announce that Elliot Dee, of Elliot Dee & Associates (Ridgewood, NJ), has agreed to accept the newly created part-time staff position of Director of External Relations with The Discovery Orchestra.

This is a critical new hire for The Discovery Orchestra and the role is an essential component of our ambitious 5-Year Strategic and Fundraising Plans.

In August, 2013, following a suggestion from former Discovery Orchestra Trustee and current Ambassador Judy Musicant, Elliot was retained by The Discovery Orchestra to undertake a consultancy comprised of 4 components: 1) a Development Audit; 2) a 5-Year Strategic Plan; 3) a Fundraising Plan and; 4) 80 hours of Implementation of the Fundraising Plan. Elliot’s consultancy was designed to extend for approximately one year.

Elliot came to us with a very relevant background. He has managed his own not-for-profit (NFP) consulting firm for the past four years since leaving his post as Director of Development for the Family Service League in Montclair. Prior to that, Elliot served as Assistant Dean of Development at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

From the very beginning, Elliot immersed himself in all aspects of The Discovery Orchestra. He is a quick study and a creative thinker. Elliot’s energy and contagious enthusiasm do not belie his detailed approach and thorough grasp of the fundamentals of nonprofit strategic planning, program development, communications, marketing and fundraising.

Elliot successfully completed the Development Audit that examined all aspects of The Discovery Orchestra’s fundraising program and evaluated it based upon best practices in the fundraising field. He worked closely and seamlessly with the Board, staff and stakeholders to complete a detailed 5-Year Strategic Plan that includes six goals and 31 strategies. Elliot followed the Strategic Plan with an equally detailed Fundraising Plan that consists of 39 initiatives designed to deliver a state of the art fundraising program to the Orchestra to provide a pathway to secure the resources needed to implement the new Strategic Plan.

It became very clear to all of us who worked closely with Elliot throughout the engagement process that he grasped The Discovery Orchestra’s unique mission and was impassioned about the opportunities in front of us to extend the reach of the Orchestra. It was also very clear that there was no one better suited to fill the role of Director of External Relations than Elliot himself.

We are indeed fortunate that Elliot has agreed to stay with us and to help lead us on this exciting journey forward.

In his new role, Elliot will serve as the primary point person for cultivation and fundraising activities and report to the Executive Director. He will work closely with the Executive Director, the Board of Trustees and the Development Committee.

Elliot, who resides with his wife and three children in Ridgewood, will officially start his new duties immediately.
