May 22, 2017

Ginny and Carolann GarafolaWARREN TWP. – The Discovery Orchestra is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and the impressive history of the Warren-based group was honored by the Township Committee.

The committee, at its Thursday, May 18 meeting, presented Executive Director Virginia Johnston with a certificate of recognition and a proclamation recognizing the orchestra’s 30th anniversary.

Discovery Orchestra Artistic Director George Marriner Maull, also known as “Maestro Maull,” could not attend the meeting. Johnston accepted the recognition on the orchestra’s behalf, and said Maull sent his thanks and appreciation.

Mayor Carolann Garafola read the proclamation, honoring the orchestra’s work to create “meaningful and memorable experiences for the listening public”.

In addition to the proclamation, Garafola surprised Johnston with a visit from residents of Mount Bethel Village, where the Discovery Orchestra holds its monthly meetings. Garafola, who is the Executive Director at Mount Bethel Village, said the residents wanted to thank the orchestra for constantly inviting them to live performances, along with giving them free CDs and DVDs for their listening pleasure. Several of the residents said they appreciated all of the “music, free tickets and DVDs” and congratulated the orchestra on 30 years and “hopefully 30 years more in the future.”

“I appreciate all of you being here tonight, you are always very welcoming at Mount Bethel Village,” said Johnston. “Thank you for your hospitality and thank you to Warren. We’ve been housed here for all of our 30 years.”
