One of the first Black composers to gain recognition in the United States, Margaret Bonds sadly did not live to hear her 1962 symphonic work, The Montgomery Variations, performed in its entirety by a professional symphony orchestra. It was recorded for the first time in 2021 by the Minnesota Orchestra. Today this work is being programmed by major professional symphony orchestras across the United States.
