Maestro Maull looks through the centuries at the string quartet, an ensemble favored by composers as the vehicle to transmit some of their most intimate and deepest feelings. Using just four instruments with generically similar timbres, forces composers to exploit the remaining six elements of music: rhythm, melody, texture, harmony, dynamics and especially form.
