Did you know that the Federal Music Project was the first national arts program created as part of the New Deal? It helped preserve our cultural music heritage and kept musicians working during the greatest economic depression in our country’s history. At this event, you will:
– Learn about the Works Progress Administration and its Federal Music Project program, which employed thousands of musicians and music teachers from 1935-39.
– See a “Posters for the People” exhibit, as well as original scores commissioned during the era, to promote music concerts and music education across the country.
– Listen to a Discovery program led by Maestro George Marriner Maull featuring Aaron Copland’s Quiet City, which was commissioned under the Federal Music Project.
– Make your own poster to take home in a live demonstration of the printing process used by the WPA poster makers of the era.
– Books and posters will also be available for sale!
