In 1943, when composer William Grant Still wrote his Suite for Violin and Piano, he took inspiration from three African American works of art, including Sargent Johnson’s “Mother & Child”, thus the name of this Inside Music episode. He decided to orchestrate the 2nd movement for string orchestra. The result? An intensified version of what was already a very moving musical statement. Host George Marriner Maull suggests ways to notice how William Grant Still created this gem and, as always, ways to listen… better!
