We are excited to share the highlights from our recent outreach collaboration with Keys 2 Success, “Discover Longing.” Held on May 11, 2024, the event featured “Longing,” the first movement of Afro-American Symphony by William Grant Still. A prolific Black American composer, Still left an indelible mark on the musical world with nearly two hundred works.
The event took place at the historic Twin Maples Estate in Summit, home of the Fortnightly Club. This beautiful venue provided the perfect setting for an evening dedicated to enriching our musical organizations. The grandeur of Twin Maples Estate added a special touch, bringing communities together in a shared appreciation of music.
Phil Bingham, Keys 2 Success Board Member and Vice President of the Barry Harris Institute of Jazz, kicked off the evening with a collaborative music-making activity, teaching the soul of blues. His rousing session was an unforgettable experience, setting a vibrant tone for the evening.
Keys 2 Success students followed with a moving 4-part piano arrangement of “Longing,” which was created by composer, arranger, and Keys teacher Elijah Souels.
Maestro George Marriner Maull then engaged the audience in a journey of intentional listening to “Longing.” His guidance helped attendees connect deeply with the music, enhancing their appreciation and understanding of William Grant Still’s work.
We invite you to experience this incredible evening of music and culture by watching the video recorded live.
